We are at War God has reminded me that we are in an intense spiritual battle. The Bible makes it clear that we are to be alert and prepared to deal with Satan. We are told that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers of Satan. God also shows us that our victory over this evil around us is only won in Christ’s love in us. A love that puts our flesh aside and chooses to overcome evil with good. We are told to love our enemies and pray for them. We are told to be kind and compassionate, to bear with one another and forgive one another. We as Christians believe these things so why do we end up so bewildered when we find ourselves in the middle of hurt and pain in our relationships? Because in our human weakness, we become “sleepy” spiritually. Although we’ve been warned to watch for Satan because he prowls around like a lion waiting for a chance to devour us or throw us into turmoil, we forget. We get tired of being in a battle, so when things “seem” to be OK, we relax. I think Satan is so crafty that he knows not to act too quickly. He waits until we are very “comfortable” and unaware. He watches for our weakness. I notice that in the midst of the pain and confusion, I am questioning God but forgetting to see Satan’s hand at work. Once I realize my true adversary, my faith swells inside me giving me the courage to act in love and forgiveness. God’s presence grows stronger; I can sense heaven opening and shining light into my world. Things aren’t instantly resolved at this point, but I can see clearly what the real problem is. Healing begins to take place. My frustration is in our human condition and our weakness in this area. Why do we have to learn this lesson over and over and over again? We don’t want to be at war. Can you imagine what would happen if our nation tried to ignore the war we are in? We have seen what can happen when we are too sure and comfortable -- in New York and also Pearl Harbor. God help us to be better-trained soldiers of Christ who will be alert and on duty at all times. 2 Timothy 2:3 “You therefore must endure hardship as good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.” |
